With reference to our earlier announcement for the Special Lecture  Series
on Qur'anic Guidance for Good Governance (Q3G) no. 4/2009 scheduled on
28th October 2009, we would like to inform you that the  speaker will be
Prof. Dr. Arif Zakaullah, who is Professor at the  Department of
Economics, International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM).

The topic of his lecture is "From Asian Financial Crisis of 1997-1998 to
the Current Global Economic Crisis: Challenges to Governance".

*BRIEF PROFILE*

Muhammad Arif Zakaullah teaches in the Department of Economics at the
International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). He graduated with a
master’s degree in Economics from Karachi University and received his
Master’s (Development Economics) and Ph.D. degrees in Economics from
Boston University and Clark University respectively. His teaching and
research interests include Economic Thought, Globalization, and American
Political Economy.  He is the author of The Cross and the Crescent: The
Rise of American Evangelicalism and the Future of Muslims (2004), and
Religion and Politics in America: The Rise of Christian Evangelists and
Their Impact (2007). The translations of these books into the Arabic and
Bosnian languages have been published in Egypt, Lebanon and Bosnia.
Zakaullah believes that for a sustainable healthy and constructive
relationship between the contemporary Western Civilization and the  Muslim
World, it is an intellectual imperative that high quality
programs in American Studies, European Union Studies and Israeli Studies
should be established in the Muslim World. He is a strong advocate of
such programs in the leading universities in the Muslim countries. He
also established the Speech and Interpersonal Communication Enhancement
(SPICE) Department at IIUM to train students in debating, public
speaking and other communication skills. The IIUM debaters have won
numerous international debating competitions, including the World Public
Speaking Championship. Over the years, Zakaullah has received numerous
awards and honors, including the Excellence in Teaching (Economics)  Award
and the Special Contribution Award given by IIUM.
